It took an additional few seconds for the somber mood that had settled over Chris to lift enough for a half-smile to make itself at home upon his face, more at ease now than before. He cast out his first doubting thought, attributing it to his own cynicism, and slid gradually back into the more comfortable role of the recklessly cavalier.
